You do not need a dedicated yoga studio to experience the full benefits of SomaYoga. A simple, quiet corner of your home is all it takes to build a supportive space. Not all of these props are needed for every practice; notice the ** symbol for common items and look to the individual class description or opening class setup for specifics.
Essential & Helpful Props
-
**A Comfortable Foundation (Mat & Blanket): A standard yoga mat provides grip, but in SomaYoga, having a firm blanket, wool blanket, or large bath towel folded on top of your mat provides gentle cushioning for floor-based somatic explorations.
-
**Bolster or Firm Pillows: Wonderful for restorative setups, chest opening, and supporting the spine or lower back during restful integration.
-
Supportive Blocks (1–2): Foam or cork blocks are invaluable for leveling poses, supporting the knees or pelvis, and bringing the floor closer to you.
-
A Theraband or Yoga Strap: Great for gentle leg-lengthening practices, shoulder mobility, and assisting functional movement or stability practices without strain.
-
A Sturdy Chair: Useful for seated somatic warm-ups, chair-supported asana, and balance integration.
-
Spinal Strip: This Yoga North favorite is great for spine mobility and stability and getting functional movement out to the largest joints of the shoulders and pelvis. Can be ordered on Yoga North website or substituted with a folded blanket.
-
9-inch Instability Ball: Yoga North loves the work of mobility and challenging stability that these balls offer. Order one on our website!
-
A Wall: Sometimes we all need something to lean on! A wall can be a wonderful tool for a therapeutic practice.
Tips for an Optimal Practice
-
Prioritize Warmth & Comfort: Somatic learning and nervous system regulation happen best when the body feels warm and safe. Wear soft, comfortable layers, and keep a pair of socks or a throw blanket nearby.
-
Move with Curiosity, Not Effort: Remember that SomaYoga is not about pushing into resistance or forcing a stretch. Move slowly, stay within your pain-free range of motion, and focus on sensing and feeling from the center out.
-
Minimize Distractions: If possible, silence phone notifications and give yourself permission to step out of "doing" mode and into "being" mode for the duration of your session.
